I am an artist and interaction designer with more than 15 years experience making engaging and sometimes experimental digital user experiences. I am the Co-Founder of Active Design Lab, a creative design studio based in Suffolk. Prior to that I was a Principal Designer at BT's Research Labs, where I managed innovation research projects. I hold an MA in Computer Graphics and Animation from the NCCA Bournemouth University and a BA (Hons) in Animation, from Edinburgh College of Art.
I like to work collaboratively with clients and partners and I continue to develop my own creative practice as an artist. I create interactive media which connects audiences and intentionally shapes their whole user experience in a meaningful and playful way.
I produce a wide range of visual media, including animation, illustration and 3D content. I have worked with emerging web and mobile technologies, IPTV, virtual reality applications and augmented reality platforms. I design and develop concepts through scenario development, user journeys and prototyping. I use pen and paper too.
As well as a creative practitioner, I am an experienced production manager. I was the project director for Participate, a three year research project which investigated multi-platform audience participation in online campaigns and events. Partners included BT, BBC and Microsoft Research. I managed a successful relationship between BT and Nottingham University's Mixed Reality Lab, exploring location-based technologies, virtual reality applications, and multi-platform user experiences. I worked with the artists Langlands & Bell and Montserrat Soto along with curators Futurecity to create networked art installations for BT's international Connected World Art Series, of which Plunged In a Stream was shortlisted for a British Council, Arts & Business International Award in 2005. I have collaborated with artists Blast Theory on cutting edge mobile experiences, including the 2003 BAFTA nominated game Uncle Roy All Around You. Early in my career I worked closely with Illuminations to produce pioneering online TV community experiences for the BBC, Channel 4 and Sky, including The Mirror, winner of a Royal Television Society Educational Television Award for Multimedia in 1997.
